What you give up at the lower price

  • Headline resolution isn't everything. A "4K" budget camera often looks softer than a premium camera's 4K, especially in low light. Some reach their headline figures through upscaling, so look for "native" resolution.
  • Stabilisation is weaker. Electronic stabilisation has improved a lot, but it's still behind the best GoPro, DJI and Insta360 systems on bumpy rides.
  • Waterproofing often needs the case. Many budget cameras are only waterproof inside the supplied housing. Check before you jump in the pool.
  • Apps and updates. Expect simpler apps and fewer firmware updates.
